Why drill a water well for my home?

Drilling a water well is an important decision and there are many factors to consider. Before drilling a water well, it's good to understand where water comes from and how we find it.

Water found below the earth's surface is called groundwater, and an aquifer is a body of permeable rock which can contain the groundwater. Excluding ocean water and frozen water, about 95% of all fresh water is made up of groundwater, with about 3% of fresh water made up of lakes, rivers and other surface water.

When a decision is made to drill a water well, the goal is to reach the aquifer so that water can be accessed and pumped out. Knowing exactly where to drill and how deep to drill can be difficult because the location of aquifers and the amount of water in them are rough estimates at best. A local, experienced drilling expert will use all of his resources and knowledge to determine the best place to drill.

What does a drilled water well consist of?
Most modern wells are drilled wells, using air or hydraulic drilling machines mounted on a truck or trailer, by penetrating the layers of ground material such as sand, gravel and clay. This will require casing and a screen to prevent sediment from flowing in which would result in a collapse. The space around the casing will be sealed with grouting material such as cement or bentonite clay, to prevent contamination to the well water from surface water draining toward the outside of the casing.

Domestic drilled wells can vary in depths as shallow as 10-60 feet and as deep as 1,000 feet, depending on how deep the aquifer is. Some industrial wells exceed depths of 3,000 feet.

    What can I expect?

AGRICULTURAL, FARMING, AND RANCHING WATER WELLS

Why do you need an agricultural water well? Water that is supplied to farming and ranching needs to be free from additives or chemicals that are commonly found in municipal water. Drilling into your own water source allows you as the property owner to provide fresh water for your crops and livestock without the high cost of municipal water bills. It allows you to have full control over your water supply quality without the worry of expensive city fees, additives or water rationing. If you have been considering it, this is the perfect time to get started with your own water well project.
